Camper Eligibility

The Day Camps at the Adventure Center of Asheville want to create a fun, challenging, and nurturing environment for as many campers as possible! In order to provide the best care possible for our campers, we must address our limitations in our programming, staffing, and facilities.

In addition to our age requirements for enrollment, all campers must be able to do the following at a developmentally-appropriate level for their age:

  • Communicate needs and concerns verbally with others at a conversational level of English
  • Understand and comply with directions given by staff
  • Refrain from unsafe and/or harmful behaviors toward self and others (including self-harm)
  • Identify and avoid health/safety risks
  • Maneuver rugged terrain and distances up to a quarter-mile
  • Follow a varied individual schedule and manage free time
  • For Kolo Bike Camps, be comfortable riding a pedal bike off-road
  • For Adventure Camp, fit into and keep on properly all high adventure equipment including a helmet, harness, and PFDs
  • Function in a group setting in a positive and cooperative manner that displays tolerance and respect for self and others.

Kolo Bike Camp and Adventure Camp are not therapeutic programs and are not appropriate choices for youth dealing with behavioral, motivational, or rehabilitation issues. If you are unsure if your camper would be suited for our camps, please reach out to our Camp Directors (camps@adventurecenterofasheville.com for Adventure Camp OR koloprograms@adventurecenterofasheville.com for Bike Camp) and we would be happy to talk more about our program and what we can offer.

COVID-19 Precautions

For over eleven years in the fresh mountain air on over 100 acres, we have hosted Adventure and Kolo campers successfully.  The last three summers, campers were required to social distance themselves from each other, wear masks, and change how they stood, sat, and ate together.  The kids accepted new challenges, adventures and had epic fun!  We are continuing our camps and programs in 2022 for kids to get their wiggles out, learn something fun and have adventures in the outdoors.

To protect all campers, families, and staff, we are taking all necessary precautions to ensure everyone can have a fun, safe and healthy summer! In accordance with guidance from the CDC and NCDHHS, the Adventure Center of Asheville does not have a universal mask requirement for the summer of 2022. Please read over the below practices that we will be following per most recent guidance:

  • Asking any campers/staff to wear a mask for at least 10 days after symptom onset or testing positive for COVID-19, or have had exposure to COVID-19.
  • Asking any campers/staff  who are at high risk for severe disease, are unvaccinated or are not up to date on vaccines, wear a mask in indoor settings.
  • Screening all participants by asking parents/guardians the following questions during sign in-
    • Have you or your camper had close contact with or cared for someone diagnosed with COVID-19 within the last 14 days?
    •  Have you or your camper experienced any cold or flu-like symptoms in the last 14 days (including a fever over 100.4 Degrees F, new cough, sore throat, difficulty breathing, sudden loss of taste/smell)?
    • If campers have tested positive for COVID-19, or have symptoms, they will be asked to leave and will be contacted by their Camp Director to establish next steps.
    • Using appropriate social-distancing during activities or modifications of activities where social distancing is not possible (like on the zipline or adventure course.)
    • Encouraging all campers and staff to practice good hygiene through frequent hand washing and hand sanitizer.
    • Limiting indoor time and sending campers in small groups to use bathrooms – and instead enjoying the great outdoors!
    • Reviewing expectations daily with campers on best practices at camp.

      About ACA Camps/Afterschool Programs

For over 50 years, The Greiner family has become a prominent leader in the guided outdoor adventure industry in the Southeastern United States.  Jeff Greiner, managing owner of the Adventure Center of Asheville, grew up in the outdoor adventure industry with his family. In 1971, Jeff’s parents started the first whitewater rafting business (Wildwater, Ltd.) in the Southeast on the Chattooga River. That small family business has grown into one of the largest and most respected professional outfitters in the United States with five locations and over 20 different adventures to choose from.

Ten years ago, the Asheville Summer Camps at the Adventure Center were created to offer the younger generation an option to get outdoors in the summer months.  Our objective is now to offer a wide variety of adventure experiences and active lifestyles while teaching leadership, responsibility, respect for the environment and others, and cooperative skills all year long. No other camp/afterschool program in Western NC offers the wide range of activities and adventures!

Throughout the year, we offer a variety of well supervised biking and adventure day camp and afterschool options for kids ages 5-15 of every skill level. Activities vary but include fun outdoor adventure activities for your child to experience!

What Our Camps Guests Are Saying…

“A friend suggested I sign up my ten-year old for the Kolo Bike Park camp this summer. The kid was already pretty passionate about mountain biking and dirt jumping before, but his experience at Kolo definitely planted the seeds of a lifelong love for riding his bike.  He particularly enjoyed being coached by his camp counselor Kevin, who always found the right words of encouragement and helped him to refine his skills on the trails and on jump lines. Wonderful mentorship into play, and someone for my son to look up to. The staff was also super welcoming and very pro-active in helping us to find a new better bike for him. He will definitely be back to ride there again soon.”

      Axelle F.

“Awesome place for camps for your kids! My kids have participated in both the adventure camp and kolo bike camp. Counselors are fantastic and encourage your kids to try new things and help them build their skills. We will be back even during the fall for more fun and adventures! We’ve gone for years as a family participating in lots of their activities. What a perfect place to get outdoors and moving especially during this pandemic.”

      April W.

“As locals, we love having a full bike park just 10 minutes from the house–pump tracks, single trails, skill park and friendly, fantastic staff. Our son goes to camp here all summer, and I ride with him several afternoons a week after work. Definitely consider the annual pass, as the more you know the park, the more you realize it has to offer. “

      Association For Traditional Studies

“This is an outstanding place with amazing staff! My son signed up for MTB camp this past summer. When we went to get him on the first day we were immediately met with a huge smile and excitement. My son loved this place. It really was like an adventure for him, teaching various skills and they met him at his level and gave him tools to boost his confidence as a rider. He loved the camp so much we signed him up for another session. I can’t say enough about the good things this camp provides! It’s a wonderful place!!”

      Samantha S.

“My son did 2 sessions with you this summer and loved it so much he’s trying to become a junior counselor.  He really enjoyed being on his bike and especially loved Kevin and all that he learned from him. It was also a great way for him to see his team from ICI in a safe socially distant environment.”

      Kimberly W.

“My 9 year old enjoyed Kolo bike park camp last week – and he is back this week with his 13 year old sister enjoying Adventure Camp. They are having a blast a rating it a “13” on a scale of 1-10. And kids are honest! Great staff. Safe and social distance friendly. Get outdoors and live life!”

      Jennifer O.

“The grounds and pump track are beautifully manicured. Staff is very friendly and they host a great camp for kids!”

      Alicia M.

“Our son has enjoyed two weeks of bike camp at KOLO this summer. Fantastic time with great counselors. He enjoyed it so much, he wants to be a counselor in training next year.”

      Michael L.

Fun for the whole family! I was with mine and a few friends last time I was here. Each course has a different... difficulty level ranging from baby mode to hardcore professional type stuff! They are all extremely fun and the harder they are, the scarier it is. It is also a good workout. I was sore after this! One of the most fun experiences I've had in a while. If you do it with a partner, I'd say it's also a good bonding experience. After all thst is said and done, they sell merchandise and frozen custard. Eating frozen custard after a long climb is really refreshing.read more

This place is pretty amazing. My 9 year old did the KidZip. It was his first experience with zip lining and he was a... bit hesitant at first. Our Ranger was Jordan and she was amazing with the children in his group. After a short class on how to operate the course he was off and flying. 2 full hours of fun. We had a great time! We took a group of corporate customers as part of an educational retreat. The location was... perfect-just a few minutes from the downtown hotels. The trip was run very smoothly from start to finish. Our two guides, West and Trent were perfect hosts and took our folks from nervous first time zippers to cannonballing high adventure heroes in no time at all! My very favorite part of the whole trip was when our most nervous participant smiled from ear-to-ear coming into the last platform! I chaperoned a group of 25 high school freshmen on a recent trip and they all had a marvelous time. The students most... enjoyed the teambuilding we did in the morning part of our session and found the facilitators engaging and attentive. Students also felt empowered to challenged themselves on the ropes course in the afternoon; even students who had vehemently claimed they wouldn't do it still tried at least one level. The more experienced students also delighted in the variety of obstacles and challenges awaiting them. I would definitely take a group here again.read more

Such an entertaining place!! Had a great time. The courses are challenging but doable and that’s what keeps it fun. The... only two downsides in my opinion were that 1. It only lasts 2 hours and starts from when you watch a video and do the whole harness thing, so you lose time to actually be up on the trees and 2. I’ve been to other adventure parks and they sell/rent gloves because the courses have elements where you need to hold onto a rope or cable. I asked for them but they don’t sell/rent or even suggest you to bring your own. My hands were really hurting afterwards. Anyways, I’d recommend it!!read more

My teen children and I did the zip lining with Donovan and Brandon this week. What great fun! I was very nervous but... our guides helped me gain confidence safely and they were so supportive and funny. We were only in town for a few days so when another zip line company cancelled our reservation due to inclement weather, we were thrilled and relieved to be able to come to Adventure Center of Asheville. Thanks for staying open and showing us a great time! Also loved the Covid safety protocols in place.read more

Our group of 8 had an amazing time on the Zipline adventure. Our guides Marz and Donovan were great. They were... extremely knowledgeable and eased some of our groups anxiety before beginning. They start you on some smaller lines before moving on to the bigger and better ones. They are also hilarious and had some killer one liners, they are sure to make you laugh. We had a great time and would definitely do it again. If you're apprehensive at all about doing this don't be, by the end, our most apprehensive person was just as eager as everyone else to get to zipping!!!read more

A lot of fun for the whole family. The price for the adventure was cheap compared to other parks we've been to and the... instructors were great. Hated having to wear a mask though which took away from the fun. Every time my mask would slip off slightly I was scolded but I guess that's where were at right now. All in all it was well worth it. Side note:Asheville has changed folks. Don't go downtown unless you're wearing a mask, even outside. The hippies run the show and will cuss you out for walking outside without one. I will NEVER go to downtown Asheville againread more

Spent the day here and loved every minute! The ziplining was amazing, and our guides Brandon and Marz made every second... enjoyable. I want to come back again and hopefully zip with those guides! You hand break here, instead of the automatic, which I actually prefer because I feel I have more control. The guides signal you when you need to break, and whether to break harder or softer. Loved every moment!read more

Our family came to the Asheville area from Virginia for a long weekend in an effort to change up our scenery and give... our kids something to look forward to because we had been under our stay-at-home order since mid-March. We decided to do the ziplining tour at Asheville Adventure Center because it gave us a chance to do something as a family outside and it was an activity the kids were really excited about. The folks at Asheville Adventure Center were amazing. Very friendly, with a great customer service attitude. We had our safety training with Jeff, whom I think is the owner, and our ziplining guides were Brandon and Donovan. They were terrific. Very low stress, but also very focused on safety and procedure. We had a very nice time talking with them over the two hours and we can't say enough about how much they added to our enjoyment of the experience. During the ziplining, we all had to wear facemasks because it was not possible to always stay six feet apart during time on the tree platforms but it was not too much of a bother and it actually ended up keeping my face warm because it was cool and breezy up in the trees. We highly recommend this company and will come back to do another activity with them the next time we come to Asheville!read more

My first time on a zipline and I loved it! I was especially impressed by the safety standards at the Adventure Center.... They took time for a training session to ensure all participants could demonstrate basic skills. ANY time a participation was up high, he/she was securely tethered by at least one (usually more) line to a strong cable. But our guides weren’t all business. Their jokes, stories, and little dance/demonstrations added greatly to the super fun experience. So go, zip, laugh and know you are in very safe hands.read more

I’ve gone to this place once every few months for the past two years. It is the best place to go for progression... without the pedaling. It closer than any real fun trail system to ride. Has endless features to session and a staff that is always kind and welcoming. My wife and I got jumping tips from one of the kids at their camp the other month and now we are starting to clear table tops!!!! They just have every increment of progression and everything is tucked away and separated enough that you aren’t constantly being watched by everyone while you are attempting to send but also close enough that if you fall and yell there is a better chance some one would hear you. Just spend your money here please and help make it even better. They’ve been putting in serious work.read more
